Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, Possibly the SoT Sequel We Should Have Gotten
One of the first things I hear from Michael McIntyre, level design director of Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, is that it takes place soon after (the awesome) Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Sure, Sands of Time had a proper (though, not nearly as well-received) sequel in Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, but lore-wise, there’s a seven-year gap between those two installments — which provides a convenient place for Forgotten Sands to take place. McIntyre quips, “Obviously, some really bad things happened to him since he became the Prince that he is in Warrior Within, and this is a chance to explore some of them.” He notes that Forgotten Sands takes place much closer to Sands of Time, so the Prince hasn’t yet entered his “I smolder with generic rage” phase yet.
The basic story premise is, “The Prince fixes his brother’s mistake.” Apparently, his older brother, Malik, stressed out from having his city under siege, decides to unleash the Sand Army to take on the invaders. While that technically works, it also has numerous side effects, such as: “fills the land with numerous monsters and undead dudes,” “encases the current populace in sand,” and “you still lose your city, but this time to mystical foes instead of just guys with swords.” McIntyre doesn’t elaborate much on the story beyond that; the only other plot element he mentions is that the Prince gets help and guidance from a djinn named Razia — who also bestows magical powers upon the Prince (more on that in a bit).
